Caribbean-Dene Princess

published on 03 September 2022

I have a Caribbean-Dene Princess
Who plays all day with me
She is searching for the sand
Elders once say stretched
Across this land

Yellowknife is so very cold
Famous city made of gold
Summer sun that stays at Midnight
A winter day where Lucia illuminates
My world with a smile to bring the light

I have a Caribbean-Dene Princess
Who dances all day with me
She stomps on her little feet
To the sound of a hide rattle
And her Pop-Pop’s Raggea beat

Yellowknife cures her soul
A place she remembers
Where Uncle played her guitar, and
Brother taught her to play harmonica
So she could become a dancing star

I have a Caribbean-Dene Princess
Who loves to sing all day to me
She listens to her mother’s hum
Keeping the heartbeat of a Dene drum
This little girl is unlike anyone

She is more beautiful than beach glass
With the innocence of a rough gem
Waiting to be moulded into a flawless
Northwest Territories Diamond
Caribbean-Dene Queen.
